Minimum Cross-entropy Reasoning: a Statistical Justiication
Degrees of belief are formed using observed evidence and statistical background information. In this paper we examine the process of how prior degrees of belief derived from the evidence are combined with statistical data to form more speciic degrees of belief. A statistical model for this process then is shown to vindicate the cross-entropy minimization principle as a rule for probabilistic de...
متن کاملA logically sound method for uncertain
Conditionals play a central part in knowledge representation and reasoning. Describing certain relationships between antecedents and consequences by \if{then{sentences" their range of expressiveness includes commonsense knowledge as well as scientiic statements. In this paper, we present the principles of maximum entropy resp. of minimum cross-entropy (ME-principles) as a logically sound and pr...
متن کاملMCE Reasoning in Recursive Causal Networks
A probabilistic method of reasoning under uncertainty is proposed based on the principle of Minimum Cross Entropy (MCE) and concept of Recursive Causal Model (RCM). The dependency and correlations among the variables are described in a special language BNDL (Belief Networks Description Language). Beliefs are propagated among the clauses of the BNDL programs representing the underlying probabili...
متن کاملA Logic For Inductive Probabilistic Reasoning
Inductive probabilistic reasoning is understood as the application of inference patterns that use statistical background information to assign (subjective) probabilities to single events. The simplest such inference pattern is direct inference: from “70% of As are Bs” and “a is an A” infer that a is a B with probability 0.7. Direct inference is generalized by Jeffrey’s rule and the principle of...
متن کاملA Logic for Default Reasoning About Probabilities
A logic is defined that allows to express in formation about statistical probabilities and about degrees of belief in specific proposi tions. By interpreting the two types of proba bilities in one common probability space, the semantics given are well suited to model the influence of statistical information on the for mation of subjective beliefs. Cross entropy minimization is a key element...
